Tanja Aumanen

Tanja Aumanen’s work challenges the viewer to find new meaning by depicting familiar characters or scenarios through a contemporary lens. Her body of work is predominantly focused on painting in oil or acrylic, but she also produces many etchings and illustrations.

Although Tanja was born in Jakobstad (Pietarsaari), Finland, she grew up in Arvika, Sweden, and Swedish is her mother tongue. She returned to Jakobstad in 1989 and resides there today. Since 2005 Tanja has regularly exhibited her work throughout Finland and Sweden. She has a bachelor of fine arts degree from Novia University of Applied Science (formerly known as Swedish Polytechnic) and a degree in teacher education from Åbo Akademi University.

“Painting is my main focus, and my inspiration comes from simple, everyday dilemmas as well as big, global issues. I aim to arouse the interest of the beholder by conveying thoughts and reflections and by putting their fantasy in motion.

I seek unexpected meetings and, at the same time, I process my own questions at issue. Sometimes historical references are mixed with contemporary expressions and current phenomena. In my paintings, well-known centuries and old characters often appear in new contexts or shapes.”
