Jessica Hand

Jessica Hand is a mixed media artist primarily working with oils and acrylics. She often uses a sgraffito technique and likes to express herself with a subdued palette in a contemporary abstract manner.

As a student, Jessica was introduced to Josef Albers work in colour theory which forever altered her perception of colour. She earned a BA from American University, Washington, D.C where she majored in graphic design and minored in communications. Jessica furthered her art and design studies at the University of Wolverhampton, School of Art and Design in England.

Her work as a creative professional for the past 25 years has had an enormous impact on her fine art practice. She has led an interactive design team at one of the world’s largest advertising agencies and collaborated with clients from around the world. Her experience working with global brands helped cultivate her creative voice. Using a combination of typography, graphics, multimedia and photography in her commercial work gave Jessica a taste for experimentation, which is reflected today in her innovative use of paints and different mediums. Jessica is adept at anticipating the needs of her audience and carefully considers how composition, colour and context contribute to how her work is interpreted. As Jessica returns to fine art, she brings with her a lifetime of creative influences.

“I approach my art practice with order and fluidity. A muted palette and layering of paint are constants in my work. My
deep love of the coast and years as a competitive swimmer have been the greatest influences on my art practice. I often study coastal waters and ecosystems, and many of my paintings show the textures, patterns and nuances of my favourite places along the coast.”
