Rachel Sasaki
Rachel Sasaki paints a variety of subjects using an expressive abstractive approach, keeping each of her works loose, wild and creatively free. Nature and her surroundings are a significant influence, and her paintings are predominantly created in an abstract style, designed to share her observations of beauty. Moments spent walking in the woods, strolling by the beach or experiencing colours and emotions stirred by prose and poetry.
She is a self-taught artist who uses acrylics, oil pastels and watercolour to produce her paintings and illustrations. Her creative process is based on an intuitive layering method that builds up and creates bold brushstrokes and palette knife textures. Broad brushstrokes deliberately leave certain details undefined as a means to acknowledge the peace that is discovered by relinquishing control. The movement of paints depicts how messy and unpredictable moments bring beauty to every story.
“I love the storytelling and emotional journey on which art allows me to take both myself and my audience on. I can connect to the deepest part of someone one brushstroke at a time. Painting allows me to express my desire to see goodness and beauty break through the dark and to communicate hope through each brushstroke.”
Rachel started painting in 2018, a year after her son was born and creating artworks alongside motherhood has brought her immense joy. She works from her little-kitchen-corner studio in her Toronto home, producing her own series of works and private commissions. Rachel is also the resident artist at COCO XO Chocolate.
