Stella Greig
Stella Greig is a contemporary painter currently residing in Melbourne, Australia. She studied Fine Arts at RMIT University and earned a Graduate Diploma of Education from the University of Melbourne. For the past 30 years, she has been a visual arts educator and regularly exhibits her own work in solo and group shows. Stella’s knowledge of contemporary arts practice, skills, knowledge, expertise and technical proficiency has contributed to her personal expression with a focus on memory, time and place.
Her work is intuitive, autobiographical and experimental in an expressive style. The sea strongly influences her paintings with an abstract emphasis on the horizon as a compositional motif with dynamic use of colour. The sea is a metaphor for home, and this strong connection to childhood memory and nostalgia continues to present itself in many diverse interpretations. The subtle and rich nuances of the sea, land and sky strongly permeate in her compositions. Stella has produced a series of paintings reflecting the concept of the “HORIZON”. The idea of an imaginary line that shifts has occupied her investigation and art practice.
Her art is about mark marking, connection to her environment and using paint to explore harmonies and contrast. Stella usually works in a series that can take her in many directions and interpretations through intuitive play with materials and techniques. Her primary medium is oil paint on canvas; this gives her the freedom and fluidity to explore colour, texture and surface dialogue.
Stella’s interest in the horizon line has a push-pull factor. It draws her in to experiment with many colour combinations, textural and painterly effects which creates contrasts, boundaries and emphasis on the picture plane.
She has undertaken numerous commissions for private clients and businesses. Stella is currently working to deliver an exhibition about her travels to the south of France. ‘After Provence’, a group show, will include landscape paintings of Stella’s journey following in the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne and Claude Monet. Stella has participated in many group shows and had a successful solo exhibition of her work in 2019.
