CoCo Schramel

Contemporary artist CoCo Schramel is inspired by the patterns and details of the species in the natural world. Growing up in Louisiana in a family of visual artists, it’s inevitable that art would be a significant part of her life. CoCo’s mother and grandmother’s creative practice inspired her to recognise the beauty of nature’s various forms and share it in her work.

“I was inspired by the intricate patterns found within the species of the natural world. My work focuses on the concentration of these beautiful patterns found on or within these different organisms. My paintings and prints often include plant-life, sea-life, reptiles, insects, crustaceans, etc. that I place in surreal landscapes. My goal is to transform these intimidating looking creatures into works of art and make the world see the ethereal beauty that I find within each one.”

She describes her artwork as “realism with a touch of surrealism” and counts Magritte and Picasso amongst her influences. CoCo also draws inspiration from the lush landscape paintings of
Henri Rousseau.

Her artwork is produced using watercolour, acrylic and printmaking, and she holds a BFA in studio art, with an emphasis in printmaking from Tulane University. She graduated in 2015 and moved to New York City, where she became a creative arts and sewing teacher. After two years, she was eager for a new adventure, which came in the form of a move to Chicago and a role at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, setting up and de-installing exhibitions. She currently resides in Chicago and continues to paint every day.
