Huo Youfeng’s artwork is inspired by his strongly held values and thoughts about the injustice and distribution of human identity and suffering. He is currently working on ‘Refuge’, a project created between California, Beijing and England. “I am concerned by the effects of past and current worldwide events. History is repeating, humanity has always been balanced with restraint and evolution, but people are not only consumed by material greed, but also greed for its own sake. History has no past. The present always has similarities with the past.
These works represent historical events and express the collective identity of people who played accidental roles in history. I selected a large group of people in historical pictures who lost individual thought and chose to ignore coercive and conniving thoughts and actions. I also want to express the truth and destruction of human nature. Present events have similarities to historical lessons, and this is like a reenactment of an absurd surrealist drama, and so is today’s reality.”
