Anna Marchetti

Anna Marchetti’s paintings explore feelings of isolation, obsession and longing through the process of their making. Working on the floor across the entire surface of the paper, she begins with sweeping, gestural strokes. Her process culminates with tightly knotted linework, allowing each mark to respond to that which preceded it. Although this web of ink often has biological sensibility, she is not interested in illustrating nature, but rather in describing the emotional environments that momentarily consume us. Marchetti gathers inspiration from a variety of places- the creeping vine of a strangler fig suffocating its host plant; the thin veil of incense smoke climbing from a church censer; the porous surface of a fractured bone revealed on a density scan. She ruminates on these sorts of images- abstracts them, compounds them, dissolves or distorts them- until they become something else entirely, ultimately serving as a metaphor for our own experiences of growth and degeneration.

Marchetti earned her Bachelor’s of Arts degree in studio art from Sewanee, The University of the South in 2012. In 2018, she completed the Masters of Fine Arts Program at San Francisco Art Institute with an emphasis in abstract painting. Marchetti currently resides in Austin, Texas, where she continues her painting practice alongside a career in arts education.
