Pauline Schulze
Pauline Schulze’s work explores pattern, fabric and the significance of shredded materials in the fashion industry. Her work reveals unusual shapes usually hidden in the construction of garments, and comments on the common practice of many major fashion houses destroying unsold clothes at the end of a season.
Pauline incorporates her fashion label, JOLONTÉ VOUS! (www.jolonte-vous.com) into her artwork, shredding dresses from her collection and using the material in her artwork. It is a statement about the difficulties independent designers face when destroying the garments, as they are extremely close to the development of the collection. After a fashion collection is produced, designers often have an excess of fabric. Pauline uses this in her work to highlight the beauty of the fabrics in another context, and shows that fabric designs can last longer than one season. The choice to use raw and natural materials is also about rejecting the popular concept of mass production. Her artworks reinforce this message by incorporating shredded pages of fashion magazines composed onto canvas. She hopes to collaborate with other fashion labels to combine the patterns she creates with their garments.
Pauline has participated in the ARTBOX Project group exhibition in Zurich Switzerland and the MADS group exhibition ‘DRESSME’ in Milan, Italy. Her professional qualifications include a BA (Hons) in International Business from the University of Plymouth Business School and a Master of Arts in Design Professional Practice from the University of Northumbria. She grew up in Kazakhstan, moved to Germany as a teenager and currently resides in Bonn.
