Stephanie
Davey-Smith
Stephanie Davey-Smith is an Australian artist living and working in Melbourne. Her paintings are intuitively driven and map an intimate conversation between colour, texture and floating compositions. Primarily working with acrylics, her work reflects playful abstract fields that often touch on botanical forms and dynamic patterns.
Stephanie is passionate about exploring the beautiful tensions within painting, such as the happenings of chance and intent, layering of soft and vivid hues and the act of gesture and precision. Throughout her painting process, Stephanie explores how colour operates. She investigates its ability to reveal a space and how it can overwhelm a surface, or most significantly, our senses.
Her varied and constantly evolving process is always finding new inspiration within the legacy of abstract expressionism, pop culture, fashion, botanicals and the beauty within natural landscapes. Stephanie grew up in Brisbane and moved to Melbourne after graduating from the Queensland University of Technology, where she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) degree.
