Erizal As
Indonesia-based contemporary artist Erizal As is renowned for his vibrant abstract paintings that break free from traditional representation. Painting directly on his canvases instead of premeditating a fixed image, he sees intuition and organic improvisation as crucial to his process. Through his energetic strokes; bold, vivid colours; and thick, dynamic textures, Erizal reflects the nuanced psychological states of the subjects in his portraits—exploring relationships between truth and image, character and identity, and the hidden and concealed. Most recently, Erizal has expanded his oeuvre to allow paint to move beyond the boundaries of his frames—creating a visual metaphor for defying restrictions within his society, and further communicating a sense of liberation in his art.
Erizal has held several solo and group exhibitions in Singapore and Indonesia, and consistently participates in esteemed art fairs across Southeast Asia.
