Masa Hayami

Masa Hayami’s art is inspired by her origins, Japanese calligraphy and Asian philosophy. She has a vast multi-disciplinary practice encompassing painting, drawing, three-dimensional approach, digital art, and painting performance using hands and body. Masa focuses on “潔さ isagiyosa”, which means you should be decisive and brave. Her artistic message comes from the inspirations of the flow and rhythms of water, nature, earth, universe, life and blood. She says, “I have to make the flow decisively, capturing the moment. It expresses myself being there, just as it is. I move forward with a strong heart, without any regret and make the flow by myself.”

Her environment influences her work, and Masa’s art is based on her first-hand experiences. Growing up, Masa’s father was violent, and she experienced complicated and sad events. Masa has been on a quest to develop herself and others’ wellbeing and search for the meaning of life to understand how humans are interconnected. She wishes to create internal and spiritual communications with her audience by sharing her artwork.

“My studio is like a Dojo. The Dojo is a place for martial arts practice and training. A place to train the mind and body and aim for human formation. Art is about touching people through your mind and heart. Western painting is about perspective on a flat surface, but Japanese calligraphy itself is flat. I am interested in exploring the boundary between them or combining them to evolve their form and bring harmony. I believe there are no boundaries in this world and no boundaries in art. I am genderless and living genderlessly. I wish to create a meaningful ‘Life Art’ for all people.”
