Karla Ruas

Karla Ruas is a Brazilian visual artist currently residing in Queenstown, New Zealand. Her academic qualifications include studies in visual art as well as post-graduate studies. She has worked as a freelance illustrator and painter as of 2012.

“As my work currently discusses the female figure, my biggest inspirations are between the female and nature, botanical illustration, editorial photography and music are references present in the construction of my artistic process, also Egon Schiele, Frida Kahlo and Gustav Klimt are the classic references. I describe my work as feminine, assuming that the tradition of the representation of the female body is organized around the integrity of the body itself and its boundaries, it creates actions that seek to break with models, establishing dichotomies between the whole / fragmented, internal/external, representation/self-representation, passive/active, man/nature. It also works with the notion of oneness and the importance of these relationships of respect and awareness that everything is connected.”
