Graduating in 2015 with a Bachelor in Design for Stage and Screen, Kathryn’s artistic direction has been influenced and inspired by the likes of Rembrandt, Paul Klee, Egon Schiele, Lawrence Mynott, Disney’s nine old men, Sonia Delaunay, Tim Walker, Shona Heath, Steve McQueen and Quentin Blake. Self directing her own illustration projects, Kathryn has gained illustrating experience within freelance drawing, projects initiated in 2016. Kathryn’s artistic philosophy is based upon the two quotes:
“Everything you can imagine is real” - Pablo Picasso.
“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye” - The little prince.
Kathryn looks at illustrating as capturing an essence which is defined as; The intrinsic nature or indispensable quality of something, especially something abstract, which determines its character. She states “I try to capture essence in the illustrations, sometimes I loose the essence by over complicating and layering the image too quickly, but I find if I just let the illustration be for awhile, it can come to life of it’s own accord. The best illustrations are those which do not need to be thought about or figured out, but are just as alive as you are when drawn of their own accord.” For Kathryn, illustrating is an expression of herself, her humour and interesting characters in the world. Kathryn sees the accomplishment within her illustrations as being able to bring joy to herself and others when creating and viewing the illustrations.
