Dawid Malek was born 14.07.1989 in Zabrze, Poland. He was a very creative child – you could not see him without crayons or something that he could draw with. When he was 12 he decided to apply to an arts school in his hometown, where he was learning the basics of drawing, painting and graphic arts for a 6 year period. After graduating he attended the Academy of Fine arts in Katowice. It was there he fell in love with graphic design, especially with poster design and illustration. Dawid got his master’s degree in 2015 and his diploma project was an illustrated book and posters based on Slavic mythology named Slavikon. Since graduating he has been working as a graphic designer on many different projects, mostly coworking with Bytom city based design studio ZVORKA.
Dawid has had two personal work exhibitions – Bubble Pop in 2013 and Hybrydarium in 2014. His works were also a part of many Polish and International exhibitions, like Poster Biennale in Katowice in 2013 and 2015 respectively and Poster Heroes 6 – Rights In Love in Torino, Italy in 2016. His works were published by FUSS magazine, PRIDE magazine, Newsweek Polska and KINK mag.
His style is mostly inspired by pop culture and kitsch, but also by Japanese culture, illustration and animation, which Dawid is an avid fan of. He notes illustrator Yoshitaka Amano, concept artist responsible for the Final Fantasy games, as his most notable inspiration, and lately also Yokihiko Ashida responsible for the Bravely Default series. Dawid describes himself as a nerd and he loves playing jRPG style video games and he hopes that someday he can be a concept artist for one of them.
