Charlie Hanlon

Starting in 2012 at the age of 19. Collages include a combination of cars, space, future, tragedy, and past. Forgotten and present. Acquiring large amounts of vintage magazines and books. From my mother. Reading and examining them as I’m taking and shredding them apart. Favouring muted and distressed colours and anything that is eerie or has a sense of strong emotion to it. Combining decades and changing them, only being able to make a glimpse of view. Wanting the viewer to feel as if every collage has a whole atmosphere and story surrounding it. Leaving that up to the imagination of the viewer. All collages are strictly Handmade using old X-Acto knives and my little brother Donald’s elementary school glue sticks. Every collage made was on the same old beat-up wooden desk that used to be my fathers.

Starting a band around the same time. Dark Satellite. I use original designs for album covers and show flyers. Often giving out free stickers of my collages before and after local shows. Since I started, my art and music has become one single creative goal. No specific message, style or theme to be pushed on the viewer. But to see what they can get out of it for themselves. Most of my collages were not intended to be made specifically. Sitting and going through material for long periods of time they sort of have a way of coming about on their own. Placing images and ideas together. Over the course of 4 years and having around 200 original designs completed, I have always been intrigued on what the viewer gets out of the image. My interest turned to a hobby, then a hobby turned into a routine, and I feel very fortunate to have my art placed with other artists with a similar creative strive as I do.
